What actually causes an ice dam
Warm air leaks from the living space into the attic. It heats the roof deck. Snow on the warm upper roof melts, and the meltwater runs down to the eaves — which hang over unheated outside air and stay cold. There it refreezes, and the ridge of ice grows.
