Why everyone is five stars

This isn't fraud. It's structure. Home-services companies ask for a review the moment a job goes well, standing in your driveway, while you're happy. Unhappy customers mostly call to complain rather than post. And a small company that does eight good jobs sits at a flawless 5.0 — permanently, on eight data points.

So the rating compresses upward until it's the baseline rather than a distinction. A 5.0 in this industry doesn't mean "the best." It means "nothing has gone publicly wrong yet." Those are very different claims, and the star icon can't tell them apart.

The trap: 5.0 with nothing behind it

Here's where it gets practical. Of the 38 companies rated a perfect 5.0, 12 have fewer than 30 reviews. The median 5.0 company has just 57.

Now put that next to the biggest gutter specialist in our dataset: PJ Fitzpatrick at 4.8★ across 2556 reviews.

Sorted by stars, the 5.0-with-6-reviews outranks it. Sorted by evidence, it isn't close. Hundreds of customers over years — including the ones who had a problem and said so — is a fundamentally different kind of information than six.

What actually separates companies

If ratings can't sort them, something has to. Three things in our data do real work:

1. Review volume and recency. Hundreds of reviews, still arriving, means a company that's been operating long enough to have failed publicly and didn't. That's the signal.

2. Actual specialization. Of the 86 companies, only 44 (51%) are dedicated gutter specialists. The rest are roofers and general contractors who do gutters on the side. For gutter work — pitch, hangers, sealed miters, the details that decide whether it sags in three years — that distinction matters more than a tenth of a star. It's why we label it on every town page.

3. Coverage. A handful of firms turn up across many towns:

Note what happens at this level: the ratings drop slightly. That's not a flaw — it's what a real distribution looks like once enough customers have been through. A company with 900+ reviews at 4.8 has had bad days, and you can read about them. That transparency is worth more than a spotless 5.0 built on a handful of jobs.

What we did with this

This study is why our rankings don't sort by stars. We weight review count and recency, we flag gutter specialists separately from roofers, and we filter out listings with spam signals before anything is ranked. How to use this today

Stop reading the star. Read the number next to it. Read the recent reviews, not the average — five detailed reviews from the last three months tell you more than a two-year-old 5.0. Check whether they actually do gutters or whether gutters are a sideline. And get three quotes — because in a field where everyone looks identical on paper, the spread on the same house is where the real information is.

Methodology

We pulled public Google review data for gutter-relevant contractors serving each of 26 towns across Bergen, Essex and Morris counties in July 2026 — 130 town-level listings, deduplicated to 86 unique companies. We classified each as a gutter specialist or a roofer/GC that also does gutters based on its primary category and services. Listings showing spam signals — keyword-stuffed names, look-alike character substitutions, no verifiable web presence — were excluded before analysis. Ratings are a snapshot and drift constantly.
