Why the backfill zone is the problem
When your house was built, a trench was dug around the foundation and then backfilled. That backfilled soil is looser and more permeable than the undisturbed ground beyond it — for the life of the house. Water landing in that zone doesn't run off; it sinks straight down along the foundation wall to the footing. That's the path into your basement.
A splash block moves water about 1–2 feet. On most homes, that's still inside the backfill zone. Which is why a house can have perfectly clean gutters, splash blocks on every downspout, and a wet basement anyway.
The math that surprises people
One inch of rain on a 1,500 sq ft roof is roughly 930 gallons of water. Split across four downspouts, that's ~230 gallons dumped at each corner — from a single ordinary inch of rain. Now picture that landing two feet from your foundation, several times a month. Basement waterproofing companies exist largely because of splash blocks.
Options, cheapest first
Roll-out / flip-up extensions ($10–$25) — fine as a stopgap, ugly, and they get mowed over. Rigid aluminum extensions ($20–$40 installed) — durable, match the downspout, the sensible default. Underground solid PVC to daylight ($15–$30/ft) — best solution where grade allows; invisible and permanent. Dry well ($800–$2,500) — for flat lots with nowhere to daylight.
Avoid corrugated flex pipe
The black ribbed pipe is cheap and everywhere, and it's a bad long-term choice underground: the ribs catch sediment, it sags between supports, and once it clogs you have a buried pipe full of standing water running along your foundation — the exact opposite of the goal. Use smooth solid PVC with a proper pitch and a cleanout.
Do this before paying for waterproofing
If a contractor quotes you $8,000 for interior basement waterproofing, first extend every downspout to 10 feet and fix any grade that slopes toward the house. It costs a few hundred dollars. It doesn't always solve the problem — but it solves it often enough that it's malpractice not to try first.

At least 4 to 6 feet from the foundation as a minimum, and 10 feet is better on clay soil or where the ground slopes toward the house. The water must also discharge onto ground that slopes away, or the extension just moves the puddle.
Are splash blocks enough?
Usually not. A splash block only pushes water about 1–2 feet out — often still within the backfill zone against the foundation, which is the most permeable soil around your house. Splash blocks prevent soil erosion but do not protect a basement.
How many downspouts do I need?
A rough rule is one downspout per 30–40 feet of gutter run, with more on steep or large roof areas. Too few downspouts causes overflow no matter how clean or well-pitched the gutters are.
Can downspouts drain underground?
Yes — buried solid PVC to a daylight outlet or dry well is the cleanest solution and keeps the yard usable. Avoid corrugated flex pipe, which sags, collects sediment, and clogs. Any underground line needs a cleanout and a real outlet, or it becomes a hidden reservoir against your foundation.
