That last row is the one that matters, and it's why the 10x price gap is misleading. Screens are cheap per foot and more expensive per year.
The thing nobody mentions: shingle grit
Ask what clogs gutters and everyone says leaves. Leaves are the visible, dramatic answer. But an asphalt roof sheds mineral granules constantly — for its entire 20–30 year life, every single rain — and that sand-like sediment washes into the trough and settles at the bottom.
Screens pass it entirely. So a screened gutter can look perfectly clean from the ground, with the screen doing its job on leaves, while a layer of wet grit silts the bottom and packs the downspout outlet. You didn't prevent the clog; you built a lid over it.
Grit is the reason micromesh needs to be micro. Anything coarser is filtering the debris you'd have noticed anyway and passing the debris you wouldn't.
The lid problem
Here's the failure mode that makes screens actively worse than nothing. Debris gets under the screen — needles, seeds, grit. Now to clean the gutter you have to unfasten and remove the screen, clean, and reinstall. That's more work than an open gutter. So people don't. So it sits.
An open gutter you clean twice a year beats a screened gutter you never open. At least you know what's in it.
Where screens are genuinely fine
Not never — just narrowly. A detached garage or shed. A home with a metal roof (no granules) and only large-leaf trees, no pines. A rental you're prepping to sell. A stopgap on one run while you save for the real thing. In those cases the cheap option is the right option.

What to check in a micromesh quote
Stainless steel mesh, not aluminum — aluminum mesh dents and deforms under debris weight and ladders. A rigid frame that won't sag between hangers. Fine enough for grit — ask the actual opening size, not "micromesh" as a marketing word. How it attaches — some systems slide under the first shingle course, which can affect certain roof warranties; ask before, not after.
