How long does gutter installation take?

Short answer: one day for most New Jersey homes — typically 4–8 hours. Seamless gutters are made at your house, roll-formed from a coil on the installer's truck and cut to your exact roofline, so there's nothing to order and nothing to wait for. What turns it into two days is almost always fascia repair discovered during tear-off.

The machine on the truck

This is the part that surprises people. A seamless gutter crew arrives with a roll-forming machine — a long box on the truck or trailer. A coil of flat aluminum feeds in one end and a finished, profiled gutter comes out the other, cut to whatever length they measured off your roof.

That's why the whole thing collapses into a single day. There's no factory order, no lead time, no lengths to join. Each run is one continuous piece made to fit your house, forty minutes ago. The day, roughly

Morning: tear off the old gutters, dispose, and inspect the fascia — this is the moment the day either stays on plan or doesn't. Midday: measure each run, roll-form, hang with hidden hangers at correct spacing and pitch. Afternoon: miters sealed, downspouts and elbows fitted, outlets cut. End: water test with a hose, magnet sweep for screws, cleanup.

Ask for that water test. It's five minutes and it's how you find a bad miter while the crew is still in your driveway rather than during November's first storm.

What actually adds the day

Fascia. The old gutters come off and the board behind them is soft — very common on NJ homes that have overflowed for a few seasons. It has to be replaced before anything can hang, because hangers won't hold in rotted wood. This is the #1 reason a one-day job becomes two, and the #1 change-order on the invoice. Copper and zinc aren't a delay, they're a different job. Soldered joints, specialty hangers, careful handling — budget 2–3 days and a crew that's actually done it.

Booking: the NJ calendar

Normal months: 1–2 weeks out. October–November: 3–6 weeks, because the entire state calls the same week the leaves drop. Prices firm up too — nobody discounts when they're booked solid.

Weather

Rain postpones — hanging gutters in a downpour is unsafe and you can't seal wet miters properly. A crew that reschedules for weather is a crew doing it right. Cold is less of an issue than wet, but sealant needs reasonable temperatures to cure, which is another argument against a December install.

Do you need to be home?

Not usually — it's all exterior work. Worth being there for two moments: the fascia inspection (so you see what they see and it's not a phone call about money) and the water test at the end.
