This is why most New Jersey homeowners have never thought about snow guards — the majority of our housing stock is asphalt shingle, and the granular surface holds snow in place until it melts. It's the metal-roof crowd, the slate Victorians in Montclair and Morristown, and modern builds with membrane roofs who deal with this.
What a slab release does
Snow on a roof is heavier than people picture — wet snow can run 15–20 lb per cubic foot. When a whole plane of it lets go at once on a steep metal roof, it arrives at the eave with real momentum. The gutter is the first thing in its path, and gutters are 0.032-inch aluminum on screws.
Typical outcomes: the gutter is torn off the fascia entirely, the front lip is bent flat, hangers are ripped through the fascia (so now it's a fascia job too), and whatever was planted below is flattened.
The one that actually matters: it lands where people walk. A slab off a second-story metal roof onto an entry path is a genuine injury, and it happens without warning on the first sunny day after a storm.
The fix
Pad / individual guards ($3–$8 per ft installed) — small brackets in a staggered pattern near the eaves. Discreet, common on metal.
Continuous bar ($8–$12 per ft) — a rail across the roof plane. Stronger, more visible, right for steep roofs with big loads.
You don't need the whole roof. This is the useful part: protect the runs above entries, walkways, driveways, and the gutter you keep replacing. That's usually a few hundred dollars, not thousands. Everywhere else, let it slide.
Installation matters more than the product
On standing-seam metal, guards should clamp to the seams — never be screwed through the panel. Every screw through a metal roof is a future leak, and you've traded a gutter problem for a roof problem. On slate, they hook or fasten in ways that don't crack tiles, which is genuinely skilled work.
This is roofer territory, not gutter-crew territory. If a gutter installer offers to screw snow guards onto your metal roof, get a roofer.
They don't fix ice dams — and can nudge them worse
Worth being clear, because the two get conflated. Ice dams come from attic heat melting roof snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. Snow guards do nothing about attic heat — and by design they hold snow at the eaves, which is where the dam forms. On a home with a warm attic, guards can make it marginally worse.

If it already happened
