How many you should have
Rough rule: one downspout per 30–40 feet of run, and more on steep or large roof planes. A 50-foot run with a single downspout at one end is a classic NJ setup and a classic overflow — the water simply cannot exit fast enough during a real storm, so it backs up and spills over the front lip. Adding a second one at the other end is often a complete cure for a few hundred dollars.
The upgrade nobody mentions
Going from a standard 2x3 downspout to a 3x4 roughly doubles drainage capacity — and it also dramatically reduces clogs, because leaves and maple seeds that jam a 2x3 outlet flush straight through a 3x4. Do this before accepting a replacement quote

Where to put it
At the low end of the run's pitch, obviously — but also think about where the water lands. Adding a downspout that discharges onto a walkway creates an ice hazard every winter. One that dumps at the foundation just moves your problem. Plan the outlet and the extension together: at least 4–6 feet from the foundation, onto ground that drains away.
The aesthetics
