Why valleys do this
A valley is where two roof planes meet in a V. Everything landing on both planes gets funnelled into that channel and accelerated down it — so by the time it reaches the eave you don't have rainfall, you have a hose. On a steep NJ colonial with two large planes feeding one valley, that jet can carry clear across a 5-inch gutter and land in your foundation planting.
People spend years diagnosing this as a clog. They clean the gutter, it still happens. They reseal the corner, it still happens. They get quoted a full replacement. The gutter was never the problem — the water simply arrives faster than any open trough can absorb.
How to know it's a valley problem

The tell on the ground
Look under the inside corners of your roofline. A valley that's been overshooting for years leaves evidence: a trench or eroded groove in the mulch, a dead patch of lawn, splashed dirt up the siding in one concentrated spot, or a foundation stain directly under it. The water has been writing this down for you.
The fix
A splash guard (also sold as a valley shield or gutter shield) is a piece of metal, usually a few inches tall, fastened inside the gutter at that corner. It rises above the front lip and catches the jet, dropping it into the trough. That's the entire technology. $10–$25 for the part, and if a contractor is already doing other work it's often nominal to add.
Match the material — aluminum on aluminum, copper on copper. Dissimilar metals with rainwater running over the joint cause galvanic corrosion, and you've introduced a corrosion point to fix a splash. See copper gutters.
Get it long enough. A guard that stops short of where the jet actually lands accomplishes nothing. Whoever installs it should watch it in rain or at least hose the valley to confirm.
When a guard isn't enough
On a very large valley — two big steep planes converging — the volume may genuinely exceed what a 5-inch gutter can carry away, guard or no guard. But try the $15 part first. It solves it more often than not, and it's the cheapest experiment in home maintenance.
One catch: they collect debris
A splash guard is a wall inside your gutter, and walls catch leaves. That corner will need attention at cleaning time — it's a fair trade for not having a waterfall, but worth knowing so your cleaner checks it.
