Do the cheap thing first
Burying downspouts is a real project, and a lot of homeowners buy it when they didn't need to. The question that decides it: can a surface extension get the water 6–10 feet out onto ground that slopes away? If yes, do that — it costs $30 and solves the same problem. Burying earns its cost when the answer is no: the yard is flat, the grade runs back toward the house, you need to move water 20+ feet, or the extensions keep getting destroyed by the mower and you're tired of it.
Solid PVC, not corrugated — this matters
The black ribbed flex pipe is what most cheap installs use, and it's a slow-motion failure. The corrugations catch sediment and grit. It sags between whatever's supporting it, creating low spots that hold water. And when it eventually clogs — it will — you have a buried pipe full of standing water running along your foundation. That's worse than no pipe at all, and you can't see it happening.
Smooth-wall solid PVC, pitched continuously, with a cleanout you can snake. If a quote doesn't say what pipe and doesn't include a cleanout, that's the quote you skip.
The outlet is the whole job
A buried pipe only works if the water has somewhere to go. Three endings:
Daylight — the pipe emerges on a slope below the house. Best option, gravity does everything, easy to verify it's working. Pop-up emitter — a spring-loaded lid in the lawn that opens under pressure. Fine, but they clog and freeze; know where yours are. Dry well — last resort for flat lots.
The failure mode is a pipe that ends nowhere useful — buried, unpitched, terminating in a low spot. Now you've paid $900 to move the puddle six feet.
The clay problem in North Jersey
Dry wells work by letting water percolate into the surrounding soil. Much of Bergen, Essex, and Morris sits on clay, which doesn't percolate — so a dry well there can become a buried bathtub that stays full for days. Any contractor proposing one on a clay lot should be doing a percolation test first. If they're not, they're guessing with your money.
Two things worth knowing
Freeze. NJ winters freeze shallow pipe. Underground runs need enough pitch that they drain fully rather than holding water that expands and cracks the line.
Never tie into a sewer. Connecting roof drains to a sanitary sewer is illegal in New Jersey municipalities and can bring real penalties. Some very old homes have this from a previous era — if yours does, that's a plumbing conversation, not a gutter one.
