Why your neighbor's gutters are fine and yours aren't
1. The trees. It's usually the trees.
Gutter debris comes from what hangs over your specific roof. Not your street, not your neighbourhood — your roof. One mature oak on your side of the property line drops a load that a bare lawn thirty feet away simply doesn't produce.

2. Roof pitch — the invisible one
Steeper roof, faster water. On a steep plane, rain accelerates down and can shoot straight over a 5-inch gutter — you'll see it curtain past the front lip while the gutter sits half empty. Your neighbour's shallower roof delivers the same rain gently into the trough.

3. Downspout count — the cheapest difference
Rule of thumb: one downspout per 30–40 feet of run. A 50-foot run with one downspout overflows in every real storm regardless of how clean it is. The neighbouring house may have two on the same length — a builder decision from 1974 that neither of you knew about.

4. Their attic, not their gutters
This is the one that surprises people. If you get ice dams and they don't, it has almost nothing to do with your gutters. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, warming the roof deck, melting snow that then refreezes at the cold eaves.

5. Hangers and pitch — the last install
They had gutters replaced in 2019 with hidden hangers at 24-inch spacing. You still have the originals on spike-and-ferrule nails that have been working loose since the Clinton administration.

6. What happens after the downspout
Their downspouts discharge onto a slope that runs away from the house. Yours end in a splash block two feet from the foundation, on flat clay, inside the backfill zone — the loosest soil around your house and the direct path to your basement.
